Is it cheaper to book direct than on Airbnb or Booking.com?
Short answer
Often, but not always. A platform charges the host a commission and may add a guest service fee, so a host who takes the booking directly keeps more and can charge less. Some do, and some keep the same price everywhere. Compare the full total for the same dates, including every fee, and ask the host directly. Price aside, booking direct gets you a direct line to the person who runs the place.
Where the difference comes from
The price on a booking platform has to cover what the platform takes. Hosts know this and many raise their platform rate to allow for it. On their own page there is no platform share, so the same host can offer the same stay for less, or add something instead: a later check-out, a transfer, a better room.
Not every host does. Some keep one price everywhere because it is simpler, and some agreements with platforms ask for it. A direct price that matches the platform price is common.
What you give up
A platform sits between you and the host: some hold your payment until after check-in, and they apply their own cancellation rules and offer a route to complain when something goes wrong. Booking direct, your agreement is with the host and the host's policy applies. That is a fair trade for many trips, as long as you check the place and the terms first.
How to compare properly
- 1
Use the same dates and guests
Prices change by night and by party size. Compare like with like.
- 2
Go to the final total
Take the platform to the last screen before payment, where the service fee, cleaning fee and taxes appear. Compare that with the host's total.
- 3
Ask the host
Tell them your dates and ask for their rate. Hosts can often be flexible on a direct booking, especially for longer stays or quiet dates.
- 4
Compare the terms as well
A cheaper price with a stricter cancellation policy may not be the better deal.
What to check
- Every fee is included in both totals, including any booking fee shown before you confirm.
- The currency is the same, and you know what your card will charge for a foreign payment.
- The cancellation terms and the deposit are comparable.
- What is included: breakfast, transfers, cleaning, local taxes.
What Airflow does not do
- Airflow does not set prices. Each host sets their own rates on every channel.
- Airflow does not promise that a direct price is lower than a platform price.
- Airflow Stay has not launched to travellers yet.
Common questions
Why would a host charge less for a direct booking?
Because no platform takes a commission from it. The host keeps more of the price and can pass some of that on.
Is the direct price always lower?
No. Some hosts keep the same price everywhere. Always compare the full total for the same dates.
Are there fees when I book through Airflow?
You pay the host, and any fee on the booking is shown before you confirm.
Can I ask a host for a better rate?
Yes. Asking directly is normal, particularly for longer stays, repeat visits and quieter dates.
Is it against the rules to book direct after finding a place on a platform?
Platforms do not allow their own messaging to be used to take a booking elsewhere. Searching for a place by name and booking on its own website is your choice as a traveller.
