A short bush-and-coast pairing with only one move between the two halves. A light aircraft drops into Tsavo East for three nights, where the plains are wide and the soil stains the elephants red. The route then turns south by road, joining the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and skirting Mombasa to reach Diani, a long reef-sheltered beach with snorkelling and diving offshore. Four nights there absorbs the travel day and still leaves time to settle in rather than pack and move again.

Arrive by fly — Road to Wilson Airport, then a light aircraft to an airstrip inside the park

Three nights in one camp suits a park this large, because the distances between areas are long and there is no need to move again to see a second part of it.

2. Diani Beach, Kenya · 4 nights

Arrive by drive — Out of the park onto the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, then south past Mombasa to the coast
