Tanzania northern circuit in 8 days (7 nights)

A loop out of Arusha that puts the biggest park in the middle rather than at the end. One night at Lake Manyara starts things gently on the way in from town, then the road runs northwest to the Serengeti for three nights of open-plain driving. Two nights on the Ngorongoro side leave a full day for the crater floor. Tarangire takes the last night, on the way back to Arusha. Four bases, seven nights, every leg by road.

The route, stop by stop

1. Lake Manyara, Tanzania · 1 night

Arrive by drive — By road southwest from Arusha, below the Rift Valley escarpment

A small park set around a soda lake, good for a first afternoon: water birds, baboon troops and a dense elephant population, all within a short circuit. One night is the right length before the drive north.

2. Serengeti, Tanzania · 3 nights

Arrive by drive — By road northwest from Lake Manyara into the Serengeti, game viewing on the way

The only stop long enough to absorb a bad morning. Three nights means two clear days of dawn drives across the plains, which is what it takes to find cats and, in season, sit with the migration herds.

3. Ngorongoro, Tanzania · 2 nights

Arrive by drive — By road out of the Serengeti to the crater rim

Two nights on the rim means the descent happens on a full day rather than a travel day. The crater floor is driven in a single push with a picnic lunch, and the second night saves a pre-dawn start.

4. Tarangire, Tanzania · 1 night

Arrive by drive — By road from Ngorongoro to Tarangire

Baobab country with a permanent river, so the game stays put. One night is enough for an afternoon and a morning drive, and it sits on the way back to Arusha.
