An arrival night outside Arusha, under Mount Meru, takes the sting out of the flight. Two nights by the crater follow, close enough for an early descent before the vehicles gather on the floor. Three nights in the Serengeti come next, in a mobile camp pitched near the herds, so seeing the migration depends mostly on travelling in the right month. The last four nights are on Zanzibar, reached by air: the reef, a spice garden walk, Stone Town and a beach. Two of the three moves are flown, which keeps the trip from turning into a run of road days.

The route, stop by stop

1. Arusha, Tanzania · 1 night

Arrive by fly — International arrival in northern Tanzania and a short transfer to a lodge outside town.

One easy night at the start means the crater is not reached on no sleep, and there is somewhere to repack before the small planes.

2. Ngorongoro, Tanzania · 2 nights

Arrive by drive — By road from Arusha up into the crater highlands.

Two nights allow one early descent with time in hand, rather than arriving and leaving on the same day.

3. Serengeti, Tanzania · 3 nights

Arrive by fly — A short hop by light aircraft onto the plains.

Three nights in a mobile camp put the couple on the part of the plains the wildebeest are crossing that month, with two full days out and one slower one.

4. Zanzibar, Tanzania · 4 nights

Arrive by fly — A flight from the plains to the island, sometimes with a stop on the way.

Four nights by the sea is the quiet half of the trip: diving and snorkelling if wanted, a spice walk and Stone Town if not, and no early starts.
