A short city night first, which takes the sting out of a red-eye arrival and leaves the domestic airport close by the next morning. A light aircraft charter then lands on the Mara plains for three mornings of game drives and guided walks. The coast takes the largest share: a flight back through the city and on to Ukunda, then a small hotel on the sand at Diani, where the days go to snorkelling and the reef. Two bush-to-beach hops, both flown, so no day is spent entirely in a vehicle.

1. Nairobi, Kenya · 1 night

Arrive by fly — Landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and a transfer to a city hotel

One night bridges an overnight arrival and a morning charter, and leaves room for the elephant orphanage or the Karen Blixen house if the timing allows.

2. Masai Mara, Kenya · 3 nights

Arrive by fly — Transfer to Wilson Airport for a light aircraft charter onto the Mara

Three mornings out on the reserve is the point at which sightings stop depending on luck, and it also covers a walk and a visit to a neighbouring community.

3. Diani Beach, Kenya · 4 nights

Arrive by fly — Back to Wilson Airport, then a second flight down to Ukunda on the coast

Four nights turns the coast into a real stay rather than a stopover, and the reef offshore gives the days shape for anyone who does not want to lie still.
