One night in Nairobi absorbs the overnight flight, with the elephant orphanage or a short park game drive to fill a spare afternoon. A light aircraft then drops into the Mara for four nights, long enough for dawn drives, a balloon ride and two mornings without an alarm. The last leg flies back through Wilson Airport and on to Ukunda for five nights on the coast south of Mombasa, where the reef, a dhow and a pool replace the vehicle. Two moves in eleven days, both by air, so no long road transfers.

Four nights in one camp means unpacking once, and it leaves slack for a quiet morning, a picnic in the grass or a slow walk with a guide instead of chasing sightings.

3. Diani Beach, Kenya · 5 nights

Arrive by fly — A scheduled flight back through Wilson Airport, then on to Ukunda on the coast.

Five nights is the point where a couple stops moving: snorkelling over the reef, a sailing afternoon, and days with nothing booked, with forest and elephants inland if the bush calls again.
