The road back runs through Mombasa and on up the coast to Watamu for the last three nights, where the offshore boats go out in the morning and the marine park reef sits off the beach for the afternoons. One night buys an afternoon drive and an early morning one in the largest of Kenya's parks, which is enough to break up a week of boat days without adding a flight.

3. Watamu, Kenya · 3 nights

Arrive by drive — Back down to Mombasa by road, then north up the coast towards Malindi

Three nights means three chances at the offshore boats, which matters when a day can be lost to weather. The marine park reef is off the beach for the afternoons.
